IC in Specific Disciplines

Some CSU faculty members have expressed concerns about the Information Competence initiative. They view Information Competence as being taught in lower division English and speech courses. They feel that their disciplines are unique and require more specialized and sophisticated information skills than are outlined in the 10 information competencies.

One of the goals of the Proposal is to identify specific information competencies within the applied majors offered at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly Pomona. This includes all majors within the following colleges and schools: Agriculture, Architecture, Business, Engineering, and Sciences. Cal State Fullerton will also participate in this part of the project in the areas of Science and Business.

Steps in Gathering Specific Information Competencies

1. Librarians Role

Librarians have a great deal of experience and background for initially identifying information competencies within these applied areas. Our participation in reference work, bibliographic instruction, faculty contact and outreach, and collection development give us a rich background to start gathering data on this project.

At Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, reference librarians responsible for these applied disciplines and a librarian from the Government Documents Department met to draw upon their experience to begin identifying specific competencies.

Connect to our initial findings

Librarians from Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Fullerton will be asked to go through the same process and the results of their work will be added to this page.

2. Faculty Role

Once the librarians at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Pomona, and CSU Fullerton have collaborated, an Information Competence list for each discipline will be developed.

Each teaching faculty member who attended the Information Competence Conference in Long Beach will be contacted and asked to review the discipline-specific lists and identify additional competencies. The CSU input form available at this site will be used to forward their suggestions.

Librarians from the two Cal Poly campuses and CSU Fullerton will contact faculty members, present the Information Competence lists and solicit further suggestions (by personal contact and/or questionnaire).

3. The Results

The results will provide an avenue for future collaborative projects between faculty members and librarians that could lead to new services and instructional programs.
